I didn't know what to expect from "Titanic" when it first came out other than being the most expensive movie ever made and the ship sinking at the end. But when I saw the film a few weeks after theatrical release, all I can say is that it was the best (until Star Wars: Episode 1.
The story wasn't just about the ship sailing away with passengers, each of the survivors with their own stories to tell. It was a love story between two young people (one rich [Kate Winslet] and one poor [Leonardo DiCaprio] who just had to stick together while trying to survive disaster ( You jump, I jump. Right? quotes Leo.
Before the disaster, DiCaprio, who plays Jack Dawson, had all the spiritual tools on loving a girl like Rose Bukater, played by Kate Winslet, who was only rich and didn't enjoy her way of life until she met him. Then their love blossoms in the air that touches the audience and myself based on the WAY it was displayed: the spitting, the conversation, the dancing, the kiss, the portrait, and the sinking.
The one particular element of the film that nearly reduced me into tears was the score (background music) which added to the drama of the film. It sounded like an angel singing from heaven above (no wonder the soundtrack went platinum and won an Oscar. That's perhaps on why the movie was deemed "sad" and why it became so popular.
This movie is definitely one of my favorite films, but it is the best romantic movie I've ever seen. You won't hear nor see a guy like me comment a romance film like that, but I bet this film touched a lot of guys' hearts as much as the girls' you know how most guys are: they don't want to admit it.
